The Northern Hawk-Owl – A Rare Sight in Denmark
The Northern Hawk-Owl is typically found in the northern forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. Unlike most owls, it is active during the day and hunts small rodents in open woodland areas. In Denmark, sightings are extremely rare, making any encounter with this remarkable bird truly special.
Several photographers gathered in Ringsted to witness the owl, all showing great respect for both the bird and each other. Thanks to modern mirrorless cameras with silent shutters, disturbances were kept to a minimum.
I personally used a Canon EOS R7 with an RF 100-500mm lens, a silent shutter, and ISO 2000 to handle the low-light conditions. The most spectacular moment came when the owl suddenly swooped down and caught a mouse - an extraordinary sight that we all felt privileged to witness.
